This high-strength, water-free serum combines 1% retinol with a moisturizing squalane base to help improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven skin texture and uneven-looking tone. Retinol supports the appearance of smoother, more refined skin, while squalane helps nourish the skin and offset some of the dryness commonly associated with retinol use. The lightweight, oil-like formula is applied during the evening treatment stage, after water-based serums and before heavier creams. Because this is The Ordinary’s highest-strength retinol-in-squalane formula, it is best suited to experienced retinol users. Beginners should consider starting with a lower concentration and gradually increasing strength as the skin develops tolerance. Apply a few drops to the face in the evening. Do not combine in the same routine with other retinoids, direct acids, direct vitamin C or copper peptides. Retinol may cause temporary irritation, redness or peeling, particularly around the eyes and mouth. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen during the daytime because retinoids can increase sensitivity to sunlight. Refrigerate the product after opening and use it within three months.
